Paean 8b, Floor Lamp
SfossilsRising with quiet strength, the chandelier from the ‘Paean’ series crafted by Sfossils takes on the forms of driftwood softened by the sea and stone sculpted by time along Canada’s Pacific coast. Its ceramic surface evokes the traces of natural erosion — rough yet deliberate, matte yet imbued with hidden depth. A meditation on impermanence, reimagined as light.
The title ‘Paean’ — meaning ‘tribute’ — reflects the artist’s deeply personal story of gratitude, both toward nature and the ceramic artists whose shared knowledge and techniques have profoundly shaped this creation. Using minerals, elements, and processes borrowed from metallurgy, glass-blowing, and ceramics, Sfossils develops glaze formulas that are unconventional in the ceramic world. The resulting surfaces evoke natural materials, transforming each form into a mysterious simulacrum of naturally occurring objects.

Sfossils is an experimental studio investigating the social, historical and cultural contexts of craft through lighting, furniture and other objects of utility. Through the development of these artifacts, the process of making and the story of their use become intertwined. Each series by the studio is a research-based inquiry into a craft movement, material or object typology. Rigorous experimentation is in continuous practice to understand the poetry and spirit of making objects that bring delight to the everyday experience.
Founded and helmed under the creative direction of artist Mike Seymour, Sfossils is based in Vancouver, Canada.
